The focus of this blog is the kitchen, but I wanted to occasionally write about other ways to reduce waste around the house. A post about zero waste shampoo bars seemed like a good place to start because shampoo bars are a lot of people’s entree into the whole zero waste lifestyle. I did an informal poll in a zero waste Facebook group I’m in to get everyone’s opinions on the best zero waste shampoo bars for every hair type and here they are!
Shampoo Bars for Normal Hair
If you have normal hair, you’ll have the easiest time finding a zero waste shampoo bar.
SKINNY and CO. Chemical Free Lavender Orange Shampoo Bar – One problem with some shampoo bars is that they can leave your hair weighed down with residue, but this bar removes build-up.
Ethique Pinkalicious Eco-Friendly Shampoo Bar for Normal Hair with Grapefruit & Vanilla – Ethique has a huuuuge cult following, with shampoo, lotion, and even serums in bar form. One bar equals 3 bottles of shampoo!
Shampoo Bars for Oily Hair
Citrus, vinegar, peppermint, rosemary and tea tree oil are all great ingredients to help balance oily hair. Also try some of the shampoo bars for dandruff.
Ethique St Clements Eco-Friendly Solid Shampoo Bar for Oily Hair – Essential oils from rosemary, juniper, basil, and a trio of citrus fruits make this bar smell amazing–and they give your scalp a deep clean too.
Tasmanian Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Tonic Shampoo Bar – If pouring apple cider vinegar over your hair isn’t your thing, try this shampoo bar instead.
Shampoo Bars for Dandruff
Many of the same ingredients that work for oily hair work for dandruff too. Peppermint and tea tree oils are especially good for healing troubled scalps.
The Yellow Bird Peppermint Shampoo Bar Soap – Free of sulfates, this vegan zero waste shampoo bar is great for dandruff and psoriasis.
A Wild Soap Bar – This bar is economical (under $8!) and it’s made with tea tree oil to soothe irritated scalps.
BRÖÖ Craft Beer Bar Shampoo Detoxifying Charcoal – You know how people do beer rinses on their hair? These shampoo bars are made with beer!
Shampoo Bars for Thinning Hair
Shampoo bars made with castor oil and essential oils of peppermint and rosemary can stimulate hair growth. When you’re shampooing your hair, take a little extra time to massage the shampoo in with your fingertips.
Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Rhassoul Clay Shampoo Bar – This shampoo bar uses rhassoul clay to help build body and volume.
SKINNY and CO. Rosemary Chemical Free Shampoo Bar – Rosemary essential oil makes this bar smell fantastic and it also boosts hair growth.
Ethique Sweet & Spicy Eco-Friendly Solid Shampoo Bar – When I asked my zero waste group for shampoo bar recommendations, Ethique came up again and again. This bar uses salt to add immediate volume and ginger, orange, and cinnamon oils to promote hair growth.
Shampoo Bars for Dry Hair
These shampoo bars replenish moisture and repair damage with the addition of a variety of carrier oils, honey, and even eggs.
J.R. Liggett Bar Shampoo Moisturizing Hair Formula – People who love this bar love. this. bar. It’s based on an old family recipe and it lathers up without sulfates or detergents.
Eggcellent Egg & Lemon Eco-Friendly Shampoo Bar for Dry Fizzy Hair – Eggs are fantastic for damaged hair, but kind of messy and gross to apply straight. So get their benefits from this shampoo instead!
Ethique Damage Control Eco-Friendly Solid Shampoo – Coconut oil, coconut cream, and cocoa butter make this bar super rich and replenishing.
