As I’ve mentioned before, I make most of my own cleaning products to save money and to generate less waste in the kitchen. This DIY All-Purpose Essential Oil Spray Cleaner is my everyday kitchen cleaning staple. It cuts through grease, it sanitizes, and it kills germs–what more can you ask for? You can even use it in the bathroom too!
Which essential oils are best for an All-Purpose Spray?
I’ve written about essential oils for cleaning your kitchen and you’re really free to use whatever you have on hand in this essential oil spray cleaner. Because lemon juice is one of the main ingredients in this cleaner, I like to work with that scent–lavender, thyme, rosemary, sage, and orange essential oils all complement the citrusy smell of lemon. Peppermint essential oil is also great for kitchen cleaning, but I’m not as crazy about the scent in this particular spray. But if that’s all you have on hand, use it!
What other ingredients are in this DIY All-Purpose Spray?
White vinegar, distilled water, and freshly squeezed lemon juice give this essential oil spray serious cleaning power. The acids in vinegar and lemon juice are antibacterial, so they kill kitchen (and bathroom!) germs and vinegar also dissolves away stains and grease. If you get greasy fingerprints on your microwave and every other cleaner just seems to smear them around instead of lifting them away, you need to try this cleaner!
How should you store this DIY All-Purpose Essential Oil Spray Cleaner?
Because of the fresh lemon juice, this cleaner will need to be stored in the fridge–it will last about a week to ten days, but the recipe doesn’t make much and if you use it to wipe down your kitchen daily, you’ll have no problem using it up before then. Essential oils degrade when exposed to light, so I always store my DIY kitchen cleaners in blue or amber spray bottles.
How can you use this All-Purpose Spray Cleaner?
Don’t use this spray cleaner on marble or granite! Lemon juice and vinegar will etch these surfaces. Got it? Good! To be extra-extra sure, you might even want to do a spot-check in an inconspicuous corner before using this on your kitchen or bathroom counter.
I use this essential oil spray cleaner in the following ways:
- To wipe down kitchen counters at the end of the day
- To sanitize the drawer pulls and knobs on my cabinets
- To clean and sanitize the inside of my refrigerator and freezer
- To clean the exteriors of my appliances, especially the microwave
- To clean and sanitize small spills on the tile floor
- To give my bathroom counters and shower a quick clean
And of course, instead of paper towels, I always use a Swedish dish cloth to eliminate waste!
